Dog behavior: Understanding belly exposure and head tilting
Understanding canine body language involves looking at the complete behavioral context. When a dog exposes its belly, it is often a sign of trust, social subordination, or a learned behavior to solicit attention. While typically a positive signal indicating a secure bond, owners should observe for muscle tension or facial expressions to distinguish between relaxation and fear.
Research also sheds light on why dogs tilt their heads. A study published in Current Biology suggests that dogs process human language in different brain hemispheres, with the left side handling meaningful words and the right side processing emotional tone. Furthermore, research from Eötvös Loránd University indicates that head tilting may be linked to cognitive abilities; ‘Gifted Word Learners’ were found to tilt their heads more frequently when hearing the names of known objects.
