Dog behaviors reveal emotional bonds and survival instincts
Research and behavioral observations highlight various ways dogs demonstrate emotional bonds and survival instincts with their human owners. One key indicator of closeness is soft, mutual eye contact, which has been linked to increased oxytocin levels in both dogs and humans, a phenomenon not observed in wolves.
Dogs also exhibit a ‘secure base effect,’ where they frequently check in with their owners while exploring new environments to ensure safety. Additionally, certain behaviors, such as maintaining eye contact while relieving themselves, are rooted in evolutionary biology. Because dogs are physically vulnerable while squatting, they look to their owners to monitor for potential threats, mirroring ancestral pack instincts where members watched over one another.
