Dog care guidance: Winter protection and exercise needs

Veterinarians and animal behavior experts provide guidance on essential dog care, focusing on winter protection and daily exercise requirements.

For winter safety, experts note that while thick-coated breeds like Huskies or Samoyeds may not require extra layers, short-haired breeds, greyhounds, puppies, and senior dogs with arthritis are highly susceptible to cold and moisture. Owners are advised to use protective balms on paw pads to prevent damage from road salt and chemicals. Signs of cold stress in dogs include shivering, a tucked tail, or refusing to walk on wet surfaces.

Regarding physical activity, experts suggest that most adult dogs require between 30 minutes and two hours of exercise daily. Dr. Carly Loyer of the ASPCA emphasizes that walks provide critical mental stimulation through sniffing and environmental exploration. Routine is particularly important for puppies to build positive emotional connections, while the specific duration of exercise should be tailored to a dog's age, breed, and overall health.
