Dog-Friendly Backyard Trend “Barkitecture” Gains Momentum

The term “barkitecture” describes a growing trend of designing backyards around dogs’ natural behaviors—running, digging, sniffing and cooling off. Lawn Love outlined twelve ideas, including splash pads, doggy pools, zoomie tracks, sniff gardens and digging pits, to protect lawns while giving pets safe play spaces. The trend is fueled by rising pet spending, with the American Pet Products Association projecting U.S. owners will spend over $165 billion on pets in 2026. Experts such as Jamie Viebach, a horticulture educator at the University of Illinois Extension, advise using pet‑safe plants, shaded rest areas and tailored layouts for each dog’s habits. The TurfMutt Foundation has highlighted barkitecture as one of the year’s top backyard trends, predicting pet‑friendly design will become a primary consideration for homeowners.
