Dog head tilting linked to cognitive processing

Scientific research suggests that when dogs tilt their heads to the side, it may be a sign of cognitive processing rather than just a cute gesture. A study published in Springer Nature by researchers from Eötvös Loránd University found that ‘Gifted Word Learners’—dogs with high linguistic intelligence—tilted their heads frequently when hearing the names of known toys.

Brain activity plays a role in this behavior. Research indicates that dogs process different components of human language in different hemispheres: the left hemisphere handles meaningful words, while the right hemisphere processes emotional tone. Head tilting may occur as the dog actively processes verbal commands or information.
