Dog health: Managing autumn tick activity and first aid

Pet owners are advised to remain vigilant regarding tick activity during the autumn months. Despite common misconceptions that the season ends in late summer, ticks often experience a second peak of activity in the fall, driven by mild temperatures and high humidity.

To protect dogs, parasite treatments should be maintained until temperatures consistently stay below 7 degrees Celsius. Regular inspections of a dog's coat after walks are recommended to prevent diseases such as piroplasmosis.

Additionally, maintaining a dedicated canine first aid kit is essential for managing common issues like cuts, torn claws, or insect stings. Owners should be prepared to stabilize a pet and limit infection risks before seeking veterinary assistance. Key resources for emergencies include the National Veterinary Toxicological Information Center (CNITV) in Lyon and the CAPAE-Ouest poison control center in Nantes.
