Dog health: Understanding tail signals and grape toxicity

Recent veterinary insights highlight critical aspects of canine health and behavior. Experts warn that a dog wagging its tail does not always indicate happiness; rather, it signals general excitement or a desire for interaction. A 2013 study in "Current Biology" noted that tail movement asymmetry can indicate emotional states, with movement toward the right often associated with positive emotions and toward the left with anxiety.

Additionally, new research has clarified the danger of grapes to dogs. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care identified tartaric acid as the cause of acute renal failure in dogs. Unlike humans, dogs lack the OAT4 organic acid transporter required to excrete this substance, causing the kidneys to store and become self-intoxicated. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, as little as one grape per 4.5 kilograms of body weight can trigger renal damage.
