Dog Health: Why Dogs Eat Grass and Nutrition Guide for Large Breeds

Veterinarians explain that dogs often eat grass as a normal behavior inherited from wild ancestors that consumed the stomach contents of herbivores. Grass can provide fiber that aids digestion and may help soothe an irritated stomach, though only about 22% of dogs vomit after eating it. If a dog frequently consumes non‑food items, owners should consult a vet to rule out the behavioral disorder pica or other health issues.

For large‑breed puppies such as the Cane Corso, balanced nutrition is crucial during rapid growth. Calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D3 and magnesium support bone development until about 24 months of age. Recommended foods include lean meats, organ meat, eggs (without shells after 24 months), and a variety of vegetables and fruits for fiber and antioxidants. Supplementation with properly balanced calcium‑phosphate‑magnesium ratios and omega‑3 sources like ground flaxseed can improve coat quality and bone strength, while avoiding excess weight that stresses developing joints.
