DogeOS launches public testnet to bring smart contracts to Dogecoin

The DogeOS project has launched a public testnet designed to expand Dogecoin (DOGE) beyond its primary use as a meme coin and payment method. The new system aims to build a decentralized ecosystem by supporting smart contracts compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) such as lending services, trading platforms, stablecoins, and blockchain games.

To ensure security and functionality, DogeOS utilizes zero-knowledge technology to verify transactions without exposing all underlying data. While the current testnet phase relies on a permissioned sequencer and a security council, the long-term goal is to integrate directly with the Dogecoin network. This would involve a proposed upgrade to Dogecoin Core, known as OP_CHECKZKP, which would enable Dogecoin miners to verify computations performed on the DogeOS layer.

Founder Jordan Jefferson noted that providing functional utility is essential for attracting institutional interest, particularly as demand for Dogecoin-based ETFs has remained low. However, the project faces technical hurdles, as the full transition to decentralized miner verification remains in the draft stage with no confirmed timeline for the mainnet launch.
