Dognosis uses AI and trained dogs to detect cancer
Dognosis, a Bangalore-based startup, is developing a non-invasive cancer detection method by combining the olfactory capabilities of trained dogs with artificial intelligence. The experimental initiative uses 3D-printed equipment equipped with sensors to monitor the dogs' brain activity, breathing, and body language as they react to human breath samples.
A study involving over 1,500 participants across six hospitals in Karnataka, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, reported a 90% accuracy rate in detecting seven types of cancer. The process involves a person breathing into a cotton mask for approximately 10 minutes, after which the sample is analyzed by a trained dog.
Co-founder Akash Kulgod stated that the technology aims to provide an affordable early detection tool, which is critical in regions where many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. While the results are considered promising by specialists, further studies with larger groups are required to establish definitive medical utility. The company aims for a commercial launch by 2027.
