Dogs at risk of heatstroke: veterinarians issue safety tips across Slovakia and Croatia
Veterinarian Martina Karasová of the University Veterinary Hospital in Košice warned that dogs can overheat during outdoor physical activity in hot weather, not only in confined spaces such as cars. She urged owners to reduce exercise, keep dogs in shade, provide ample water, use cool surfaces or cooling mats, and pay special attention to brachycephalic breeds, dogs with dense coats, puppies, seniors and overweight pets.
Comparable guidance was published in Croatia, recommending walks in the early morning or late evening, carrying water, checking pavement temperature with a hand, protecting paws and skin from sunburn, and watching for signs of heatstroke such as heavy panting, weakness, vomiting or collapse. Both sources stress immediate cooling with gradual wetting and prompt veterinary care if heatstroke is suspected.
