Dogs May Safely Eat Certain Cheeses in Moderation

Cheese is not toxic to dogs, but its suitability depends on the type and amount. Dogs produce little lactase, so low‑lactose, long‑aged cheeses such as Gouda, Emmental, Parmesan, Cheddar, Pecorino, Grana Padano, and goat or sheep cheese are generally well tolerated. These cheeses provide calcium and vitamins when offered as occasional snacks.

Owners should limit portions, choose low‑fat, unsalted varieties, and avoid added ingredients like pepper or chili. High‑fat or high‑salt cheeses can contribute to weight gain and stress the kidneys and pancreas. A small piece of cheese a few times a week is considered a safe guideline for most adult dogs.

Veterinary nutrition experts advise consulting a pet‑food professional for personalized recommendations, especially for dogs with health issues or lactose sensitivity.
