This instinctual behavior lacks a built‑in warning system, so dogs often remain in the sun until they begin to overheat.

Breeds with short noses such as French Bulldogs, Pugs and Bulldogs, as well as older dogs, puppies, overweight animals and those with heart or breathing problems, are especially vulnerable. Overheating signs include excessive panting, heavy drooling, weakness, vomiting or collapse. Owners should keep dogs indoors during extreme heat, limit outdoor time to bathroom breaks, ensure constant shade and fresh water, and consider pet‑safe sunscreen for light‑coated or thin‑fur dogs.
