Doha attack targets Hamas delegation during ceasefire talks

New details have emerged regarding an Israeli attack targeting high-level Hamas officials in Doha, Qatar, on September 9, 2024. The delegation was gathered to discuss a ceasefire proposal mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Reports indicate that Israel launched six consecutive strikes using 12 missiles. The attack targeted several locations, including the office of Hamas negotiator Khalil al-Hayya and his family residence. While the delegation members survived due to a last-minute relocation to a different building—a move credited to Maem el-Hayya—the strike resulted in fatalities, including Maem el-Hayya and Cihad Labad.

Hamas official Basim Naim stated that the attack occurred while the movement was actively seeking peace and considering the American proposal. Naim characterized the strike as an attempt by the Israeli government to sabotage the peace process and protect Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s personal political interests. The incident reportedly caused significant friction, with claims that Netanyahu had to apologize to officials following the strike.
