Dolenjska circular structures spark mystery

Unexplained circular structures, measuring approximately 15 to 20 meters in diameter and surrounded by shallow ditches, have been observed in the forests of the Dolenjska region. The origin of these formations remains unknown, leading to various local and expert hypotheses.

One theory suggests the circles may be linked to pre-Christian or ancient religious sanctuaries. This hypothesis draws parallels to observations made by Pavle Medvešček, who documented circular spaces and sacred sites in other parts of Slovenia. Proponents note that some structures are located near prehistoric hillforts, though this connection is not yet archaeologically confirmed.

An alternative, more practical explanation is that the circles are remnants of former charcoal mining operations. Such circular platforms are common in European forests, used historically for charcoal production, though some observers dispute this being the case for these specific sites.
