Dolj Council launches UNESCO bid for Oltenia clay baking dome
The Dolj County Council inaugurated a multi‑annual cultural project called “The Culture of the Clay Baking Dome in Oltenia”. The initiative seeks to document and protect the traditional technique of making and using the clay baking dome, known locally as the “test”, with the first step being registration in Romania’s National Registry of Intangible Cultural Heritage and a subsequent nomination to UNESCO.
The project is implemented by the Dolj County Centre for Culture and Arts together with the Oltenia Museum, and involves partners such as the Craiova Food Industry High School, the Curaj Înainte Association, the Ministry of Culture and the National Heritage Institute. Fieldwork is underway in several localities to record the craft, while restored tower houses (“cule”) in Brabova and Cernătești, funded by EU resources, are highlighted through events like the Brabova Traditional Music Festival and a film festival in Cernătești.
Council president Cosmin Vasile emphasized the effort as part of Dolj’s strategy to promote local heritage internationally, recalling previous UNESCO listings for Horezu ceramics, the Căluș ritual and Romanian embroidery. UNESCO expert Ioana Baskerville attended the launch, underscoring the cultural significance of the clay‑baked bread tradition for the Oltenia region.
