Dollar General sued by FTC and 20 states over deceptive pricing

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a coalition of 20 states have filed a lawsuit against Dollar General, alleging the retailer engaged in long-running deceptive pricing practices. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, claims the company routinely charged customers more at the register than the prices displayed on shelf tags, advertisements, and digital channels.

Regulators allege that Dollar General failed to correct these discrepancies despite having extensive corporate knowledge of the issue and receiving more than 29,000 consumer complaints regarding price honoring between January 2023 and March 2026. Undercover investigations conducted by the FTC in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Maryland reportedly found that every transaction resulted in a higher charge at the register than advertised.

The lawsuit seeks monetary relief, including restitution for affected customers, civil penalties, and a permanent injunction to prevent future violations. The participating states include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin.
