Dolly Parton reflects on marriage and imagined family with Carl Dean

Dolly Parton has shared reflections on her marriage to Carl Dean and the family life they once imagined. The couple, who married on May 30, 1966, in Ringgold, Georgia, never had children.

Parton revealed in a past interview that they had even chosen a name for a potential daughter, Carla. She noted that while she would have been a devoted mother, she recognized that having children would have fundamentally altered her career and prevented her from becoming a star.

Instead of raising her own children, Parton directed her focus toward philanthropy and family, including her involvement with her nieces and nephews and the creation of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to children.
