Dolly Parton: The inspirations behind her most iconic songs

Dolly Parton’s most enduring musical hits were shaped by significant personal experiences and life transitions. Her 1971 song ‘Coat of Many Colors’ was inspired by her impoverished childhood in rural Tennessee. The track reflects a memory of a handmade coat her mother, Avie Lee Parton, sewed from donated rags. While the garment was a source of empowerment through the biblical story of Joseph, it also became a source of childhood embarrassment when peers mocked her family's poverty.

Her career-defining hit ‘I Will Always Love You’ originated from her decision to leave her professional partnership with Porter Wagoner to pursue a solo career. Written as a farewell, the song reached number one in 1974. The departure led to a legal dispute in 1980, when Wagoner sued Parton for breach of contract, though the two eventually reconciled before his death in 2007.
