Dolores Huerta, civil rights and labor icon, dies at 96

Dolores Huerta, a foundational figure in the American labor movement and civil rights struggle, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96 years old. Her family confirmed her passing, noting that the cause of death was cancer.

Huerta was a co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW) union, established in 1962 alongside Cesar Chavez. Her activism was instrumental in securing improved wages, healthcare, and safer working conditions for agricultural workers, many of whom were immigrants. She is also widely credited with creating the iconic rallying cry ‘Sí, se puede’ (Yes, we can).

In the months preceding her death, Huerta’s legacy became a subject of intense discussion after she broke a decades-long silence to disclose that she had been sexually assaulted by Chavez in the 1960s. She stated she had remained silent to avoid damaging the farmworker movement. In 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
