Dolphin intelligence and social behaviors

Dolphins are highly intelligent, warm-blooded marine mammals characterized by complex social structures and advanced cognitive abilities. They utilize echolocation to navigate and hunt, and they exhibit self-awareness, evidenced by their ability to recognize themselves in mirrors. To remain safe from predators while resting, dolphins practice unihemispheric sleep, allowing one hemisphere of the brain to remain alert while the other sleeps.

Socially, dolphins live in groups known as pods, which can vary in size from a few individuals to over a thousand. While they form various social bonds, such as male alliances for competition or female bonds based on kinship, they do not typically pair for life. Instead, their mating strategies often involve promiscuity or short-term partnerships for hunting and reproduction, with the strongest enduring bond being that between a mother and her calf.
