Dolphin Moana died from trauma at Delfinario Sonora

A necropsy has revealed that Moana, an eight-year-old female bottlenose dolphin, died from trauma at the Delfinario Sonora in Guaymas, Mexico. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) stated that the injury is potentially linked to the detachment of an infrastructure element within the facility.

Profepa is currently conducting inspections to determine if the establishment met legal obligations regarding maintenance, veterinary care, and animal handling. The agency is also monitoring the health, water quality, and life support systems for the remaining dolphins at the site.

In response to the death, the organization Empty The Tanks Mexico and other civil groups have called for the suspension of shows, visitor interactions, and dolphin therapy programs. They are demanding an independent inspection of the facility and the creation of a wildlife conservation center to relocate the remaining marine mammals for care without the purpose of entertainment or reproduction.
