Dolphin death in Spain sparks outrage over animal transfers

Rocky, a 29-year-old male dolphin, died at the Selwo Marina park near Malaga, Spain, following his transfer from the Marineland park in Antibes, France. The death occurred during the night of October 10-11, 2026. Selwo Marina has announced that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Conservation groups, including Sea Shepherd France and Tilikum’s Spirit, have expressed outrage over the incident. These organizations claim they had previously warned against the transfer, citing risks such as extreme heat, transport stress, and the disruption of social bonds. Sea Shepherd France noted that they had attempted to block the transfer through legal action, but the move proceeded regardless.

The death of Rocky follows a series of similar incidents involving marine mammals transferred from a closed park in Canada to facilities in the United States and Spain. Activists are calling for accountability from the French government and the captivity industry regarding the safety of these animal transfers.
