Domžale-Kamnik Wastewater Plant opens new sludge drying facility

The Domžale-Kamnik Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CČN) has officially opened a new sludge drying facility. The project, which began trial operations in February 2026, was inaugurated during an open house event on September 19, 2026.

The investment totaled 6.387 million euros (excluding VAT) and was funded by the owner municipalities: Domžale, Kamnik, Mengeš, Trzin, Komenda, and Cerklje na Gorenjskem. The facility upgrades the existing wastewater cleaning and sludge management system.

According to Director Marjetka Levstek, the new technology will reduce sludge volume by approximately 70 percent through additional drying. This reduction is expected to decrease transport costs for incineration abroad by 60 percent and overall sludge treatment costs by 80 percent. The resulting dry sludge serves as a useful energy source with a heating value comparable to brown coal.
