Domžale-Kamnik wastewater plant tests microplastic removal technologies

The Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Domžale-Kamnik in Slovenia is testing four technological solutions to remove microplastics from wastewater as part of the European INSPIRE project. The pilot testing, conducted in collaboration with the University of Maribor, includes technologies such as EcoPlex from Waste & Water, Super-TW-Net from DELVEC, a membrane filtration system from CleraOne, and a photocatalytic reactor developed by the Swedish KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

The INSPIRE project is part of the European mission to restore oceans and waters by 2030, which aims to reduce microplastic pollution by at least 30 percent by the end of the decade. Results and practical application possibilities will be presented during a demonstration day scheduled for November 11, 2026. This initiative addresses new requirements from the updated European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) regarding the removal of micro-pollutants.
