Domaniç walnut producers seek cooperatives and storage facilities

Walnut producers in the Domaniç district of Kütahya are calling for government and local support to address significant economic challenges. The region produces approximately 300 tons of walnuts annually, but farmers report being unable to sell their products at fair market prices.

Key issues cited by producers include the absence of a cooperative structure and a lack of modern drying and storage facilities. Without a collective sales platform, individual farmers must negotiate with traders independently, which reduces their bargaining power. Producers noted that they are often forced to sell quickly for cash, making them vulnerable to low offers.

Farmers highlighted a significant price disparity between regions, claiming that while traders offer 40-45 lira per unit in the neighboring İnegöl district, they offer only 28 lira in Domaniç, often citing transportation costs as justification. Producer Selahattin Öztürk has called upon the local mayor to lead efforts in establishing a cooperative and investing in necessary infrastructure to prevent quality loss and improve market positioning.
