Dome-Kwabenya road project stalls amid funding and debt issues

Residents of Dome-Kwabenya, Berekuso, and Kitase staged a peaceful protest to demand the rehabilitation of the Dome-Kwabenya–Berekuso–Kitase Road, which they claim has been in poor condition for approximately 20 years. Protesters highlighted the hardships faced by commuters and businesses, as well as health concerns caused by excessive dust.

Nicholas Asare Tieku, Project Manager at First Sky Construction Ltd, attributed the project's delays to significant financial hurdles. Originally awarded in July 2022 with a two-year timeline, construction slowed in early 2023 due to funding issues linked to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. Further complications arose when the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development suspended withdrawal rights under its loan agreements, which finance the project.

While the contractor recently resumed some work on the sub-base course, progress remains hindered by the lack of a formalized new contract. The Ghana Highway Authority has reportedly provided assurances that the project contract will be reassessed and re-signed.
