Domenico Papalia, prominent 'ndrangheta boss, dies in Milan
Domenico Papalia, a prominent figure in the 'ndrangheta criminal organization, has died at the age of 81 in Milan. He passed away at the San Paolo Hospital following a battle with cancer.
Papalia was considered a key leader of the 'ndrangheta in Northern Italy, specifically within the Lombardy region. Alongside his brothers, Antonio and Rocco, he was instrumental in expanding the Papalia-Barbaro clan's influence in the Milanese hinterland, including areas such as Buccinasco and Corsico. The clan's criminal empire was built on activities including drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, and kidnapping.
Having spent nearly 49 years in prison, Papalia was one of Italy's longest-serving inmates. While he was acquitted in 2017 of the murder of Antonio D'Agostino, he held definitive life sentences for the 1983 murder of lawyer Pietro Labate and the 1990 murder of prison educator Umberto Mormile. He had been released from prison in July on medical grounds, allowing him to spend his final weeks under house arrest before being hospitalized.
