Domestic cats demonstrate complex social bonds and olfactory recognition

Recent studies and veterinary observations suggest that domestic cats possess complex social behaviors and strong emotional bonds with their owners, challenging the perception of them as purely solitary animals.

A study published in the journal PLOS ONE by researchers at the Tokyo University of Agriculture found that cats use their sense of smell to distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar people. In experiments involving 30 cats, animals spent significantly more time sniffing scents from strangers compared to those of their owners, indicating a highly developed instinctual use of olfaction to categorize social environments.

Veterinary experts note that cats express their social connections through physical behaviors such as rubbing against their owners, purring, or seeking contact upon their return home. Additionally, cats may seek out items associated with their owners, such as clothing or bedding, to utilize familiar scents as a source of comfort while their human companions are away.
