Domestic cloud services: High empathy but low understanding among Japanese professionals

A survey of 500 employees and executives involved in cloud server selection conducted by NetAssist Co., Ltd. reveals a gap between the perceived value of domestic cloud services and their actual adoption in Japan. While over 70% of respondents express empathy for the importance of domestic clouds—citing reasons such as compliance with local laws, domestic data management, and reducing dependence on foreign providers—less than 20% claim to fully understand the specific features and benefits of these services.

The report highlights that while security (40.2%), cost (39.2%), and stability (34.6%) are the primary drivers for selection, being a domestic provider is only a decisive factor for 12.4% of respondents. The study also notes that the selection of Sakura Internet’s ‘Sakura Cloud’ as a provider for the ‘Government Cloud’ has increased trust in domestic options, with 73.8% of those aware of the Government Cloud stating such adoptions bolster confidence in domestic providers.

Case studies included in the report, such as Ice Milly Co., Ltd., demonstrate shifts from international providers like AWS to Sakura Internet due to rising costs driven by currency fluctuations.
