Domestic violence and assault cases face legal complexities in UK and Australia
In separate legal developments, courts in the United Kingdom and Australia are addressing domestic violence and assault cases involving defendants with complex criminal histories.
At Chelmsford Crown Court in the UK, Darryl Bright, 41, changed his pleas to include five counts of actual bodily harm and two counts of assault by beating. These offences, which occurred in Braintree, were described by Judge Mary Loram KC as “really nasty domestic violence offences.” Bright, who has a prior conviction for grievous bodily harm, is scheduled to be sentenced on November 10 following a pre-sentence report.
In Australia, Zane Birchall appeared via video link from a Queensland prison at the Armidale Local Court. Birchall faces charges including one count of assault causing actual bodily harm and two counts of contravening an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO). The proceedings face delays as Birchall faces potential life imprisonment for separate offences in Queensland, which may prevent him from addressing the New South Wales charges until his current sentence is resolved.
