Domestic violence in Poland: Police interventions and rising Blue Card cases

Domestic violence remains a pervasive issue in Poland, characterized by physical, psychological, and emotional abuse. Recent police interventions highlight the severity of the problem, such as in Szklarska Poręba, where a man was detained for regularly abusing his partner, including threats with a knife. The Jelenia Góra district prosecutor has since imposed police supervision, a ban on contact, and ordered the perpetrator to vacate the shared residence. The suspect faces up to five years in prison.

Reports indicate that Polish police open approximately 90 new Blue Card files daily, a procedure used to monitor domestic violence cases. Experts, including criminologist Alicja Serafin, note that domestic violence is frequently a precursor to femicide. Investigations into these patterns reveal that many perpetrators justify their actions by claiming provocation, while victims often suffer in silence due to fear, shame, or isolation.
