Oeiras teenager ordered to training center after killing mother
A 15-year-old boy has been ordered to a closed training center for three months following the death of his mother, Gabriela Barbosa, in Algés, Oeiras. The teenager reportedly killed her using a chokehold.
The incident has sparked intense scrutiny regarding the response of Portuguese authorities. Reports indicate the teenager had previously attempted to report death threats from his mother to the Polícia de Segurança Nacional (PSP). While the PSP stated they had responded to multiple family incidents and communicated with relevant child protection services, critics and family members question why more decisive action was not taken to prevent the tragedy.
The family history is marked by severe domestic violence. The children's father has been in custody since late 2025 for an incident where he allegedly attempted to strangle Gabriela Barbosa. The teenager had reportedly witnessed this violence and had previously attempted to protect his mother and sister. The victim's four-year-old daughter was present during the incident and is now under state care.
