Dominican Republic authorities conduct major drug and weapons seizures

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have conducted extensive law enforcement operations targeting narcotics and illegal weapons. In the provinces of Independencia and Bahoruco, police and military forces detained 13 individuals and seized nine firearms along with 354 grams of suspected narcotics. In other regions, including Santo Domingo and Boca Chica, the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD) carried out over 1,100 operations, resulting in 152 arrests and the seizure of nearly 58 kilograms of various substances, including cocaine and marijuana.

Additional high-profile seizures include the arrest of a Spanish national at Punta Cana Airport attempting to smuggle 20 packages of cocaine, and the detention of a Dominican-Dutch fugitive wanted by France for money laundering. In a separate case, a business partner was placed in preventive detention following the discovery of over 200 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a trailer at the Port of Santo Domingo.

Public sentiment regarding these security issues remains tense. An ACD Media survey indicates that 57% of the population views the country's current situation negatively, citing crime and insecurity as primary concerns. Furthermore, 67.8% of respondents expressed rejection of police actions involving alleged abuses of authority, excessive force, or deaths during interventions.
