Dominican Bank Superintendent Alejandro Fernández to leave office Aug 16

Alejandro Fernández W., the superintendent of the Dominican Republic’s Superintendency of Banks, announced that he will step down on 16 August 2024, ending a six‑year tenure that began in August 2020. He told President Luis Abinader of his decision in April and cited personal and family reasons, as well as a personal conviction about limited public service, for not seeking a renewal.

During his term the regulator modernised the supervisory framework, expanded financial inclusion and protected more than half a million users. It carried out 593 inspections of banks, financial groups and fiduciary entities, issued 12 instructives, 99 circulars and 74 letters circulars, and achieved the first resolution of Bancamérica under the Monetary and Financial Law, transferring all assets and liabilities to a solvent bank and fully reimbursing depositors. Fernández’s departure comes as the government prepares to appoint a new superintendent and decide on the central‑bank governor in August.
