Dominican basketball tournaments drive RD$300 million in economic activity

Top-tier basketball tournaments in the Dominican Republic are generating significant economic activity, with estimates suggesting a total impact exceeding RD$300 million. Rafael Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), noted that the sport serves as a major driver for social and economic development across numerous communities.

Uribe highlighted that the economic movement includes job creation and resources mobilized for players, coaches, referees, officials, sponsors, and local merchants. He specifically mentioned that the tournaments in the Distrito Nacional and Santiago alone account for over RD$100 million. Individual teams are reported to manage budgets ranging from RD$5 million to RD$8 million, excluding additional organizational and operational costs.

Regarding the management of these major events, such as the Distrito Nacional Superior Basketball Tournament (TBS), there are calls for more robust year-round organizational structures. Experts suggest that successful execution requires dedicated administrative, press, and marketing teams working throughout the off-season to ensure technical and commercial success.
