Dominican citizen claims to fight for Russian Army in Ukraine

Juan Carlos Ávila Espaillat, a Dominican citizen, has gained social media attention after posting videos claiming to be fighting for the Russian Army in the conflict against Ukraine. In his footage, Ávila Espaillat appears in military camouflage and carries long firearms, describing combat experiences such as a mission he termed a ‘successful rescue’ where he claimed to have lost two comrades while evacuating a third.

His presence has sparked calls for investigation in the Dominican Republic. Communicator Aneudy Ramírez has urged authorities to look into how citizens are being recruited and transported to Russia. Concerns have been raised regarding potential human trafficking, with reports suggesting that vulnerable individuals may be lured by promises of high-paying jobs, only to have their documents and phones confiscated upon arrival in Russia.

Investigations into recruitment methods have highlighted suspicious social media advertisements. One such instance involved a ‘Nilo Travel Agency’ that, despite its tourism branding, reportedly used WhatsApp to facilitate recruitment processes for the Russian Ministry of Defense or authorized contractors.
