Dominican Defense Minister Launches 'Strong Border' Strategy to Boost Security and Development

Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre presented the FUERTE (Strong) strategy for the Dominican Republic’s border region. The plan seeks to turn historically vulnerable frontier zones into safe, integrated areas by coupling security measures with infrastructure projects, roads, connectivity, economic activity and social programs.

Fernández Onofre stressed that lasting security cannot rely solely on military presence; it must be built alongside modern infrastructure, institutional strengthening and opportunities for local communities. The strategy aims to address migration pressures, transnational crime and regional dynamics through coordinated state action and sustained on‑the‑ground supervision by the defense ministry.
