Dominican diaspora reaches over 2.5 million in North America
A recent sociodemographic report from the Institute of Dominicans and Dominican Women Abroad (Index) reveals that 2,572,796 Dominicans reside in North America. This figure accounts for 84.9% of the total Dominican population living abroad. The United States hosts the vast majority with 2,539,893 residents, followed by Canada with 22,125 and Mexico with 10,539.
The North American population is 52.6% female and 47.4% male. Demographically, 39.9% of the population is aged between 0 and 25 years.
In Puerto Rico, the Dominican community represents approximately 58.5% to 60% of the total foreign-born population. While official census data estimates the population at roughly 54,000, some organizations suggest the number could exceed 200,000 when including undocumented residents. The community is concentrated heavily in San Juan and Carolina, and is estimated to contribute approximately $1.7 billion to the local economy.
