Dominican Foreign Minister visits Canada to boost trade and investment

Dominican Republic Foreign Minister Víctor ‘Ito’ Bisonó has arrived in Canada for an official visit to Ottawa and Toronto, marking the first visit by a Dominican chancellor to the country in over 20 years. The mission, coinciding with the 72nd anniversary of diplomatic relations, aims to strengthen political dialogue and expand economic cooperation.

During meetings with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Government Chief of Staff Marc-André Blanchard, discussions focused on strategic sectors including critical minerals, energy, logistics, and responsible mining. The two nations also signed a cooperation agreement regarding aviation security and discussed regional stability, specifically the ongoing crisis in Haiti.

Bisonó is leading a delegation of private sector representatives from industries such as banking, tourism, energy, and free zones to promote ‘economic diplomacy.’ He noted that Canadian foreign direct investment in the Dominican Republic reached approximately US$1,761 million between 2019 and 2025. The visit also includes the opening of an office for the Institute of Dominicans Abroad (Index) in Canada.
