La Cuaba waste plant project canceled following community protests

The Dominican government has reached an agreement to cancel the installation of a waste classification and disposal plant in La Cuaba, Pedro Brand. The decision, ordered by President Luis Abinader, follows more than six months of community protests and demonstrations by residents concerned about the project's impact on the environment, water sources, and local tourism.

Under the agreement, the company Oak House will work with government and municipal authorities to identify an alternative location outside of La Cuaba to develop the project. The initiative aims to address the solid waste management needs of the Greater Santo Domingo area while respecting the environmental concerns of the local population.

The announcement was communicated to community leaders by a high-level commission including the President's Vice Minister, Alexis Jiménez, and the President of the Mancomunidad del Gran Santo Domingo, Junior Santos. Local community organizations, including the 'No Vertedero' movement, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the dialogue.
