Dominican group honors Cuban commander Delio Gómez Ochoa

The Dominican organization Movimiento Izquierda Unida (MIU) has honored Cuban commander Delio Gómez Ochoa for his historical legacy. To recognize his contributions, the MIU named its provincial committee in Moca, Espaillat province, after him.

Gómez Ochoa is recognized as a National Hero of the Dominican Republic. He was an advisor during the 1959 expeditions of Constanza, Maimón, and Estero Hondo, which aimed to combat the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. Although the military expeditions were defeated, they are viewed as a moral victory that helped lead to the end of the Trujillo regime. Gómez Ochoa was captured during these actions and remained in prison until his release in 1961.

In June 2025, Gómez Ochoa visited the Dominican Republic to participate in commemorations of the 66th anniversary of the 1959 expeditions. Additionally, the book ‘La suerte de sobrevivir’ (The Luck of Surviving), written by Wilmer Rodríguez, was recently presented in the country, detailing his life from student struggles to his involvement in the Sierra Maestra guerrilla movement.
