Dominican labor unions announce protests against labor code reform

Labor unions in the Dominican Republic have announced a series of mobilizations to oppose attempts to restart discussions regarding the reform of the Labor Code. The Confederation Nacional de Unidad Sindical (CNUS), led by Rafael Abreu, stated that the previous reform process has expired and should not be reintroduced under the same terms.

A primary concern for the movement is the potential elimination of severance pay (cesantía). The unions intend to prevent the government, Congress, and the business sector from resuming negotiations that could impact workers' rights.

The protest schedule begins in La Romana on October 28, followed by demonstrations in Barahona and Santiago de los Caballeros on November 11 and 18, respectively. Following these regional actions, the labor leadership plans to organize a major concentration at the Plazoleta Mauricio Báez in the Distrito Nacional.
