Dominican man joins Russian military after deceptive job offer
A 28-year-old Dominican man, Juan Carlos Ávila Espaillat, has reportedly joined the Russian Armed Forces under a military contract, according to documents attributed to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
His family, based in the Higüey and Bávaro regions, stated they were initially led to believe he was traveling to Russia for employment. According to his aunt, Massiel Ávila Cedeño, the young man had met a Russian woman who offered to help him find work, specifically as a welder. The family believed she had purchased his flight and a phone to facilitate his job search.
Suspicion arose when Ávila Espaillat sent a photograph wearing what appeared to be a guard uniform. His brother, Óscar Fabián Ávila Espaillat, translated a contract in Russian which confirmed that his brother had passed a selection process to serve in the Russian military. Reports suggest he may currently be deployed to the front lines of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Some reports indicate that this may not be an isolated incident, suggesting that other Dominican citizens might be being recruited through similar deceptive job offers and routed through third countries like Brazil or Turkey before reaching Russia.
