Dominican mayors highlighted as models of municipal governance

Former president Hipólito Mejía said his daughter, Carolina Mejía, the mayor of the Distrito Nacional, was the only one of his children to show an early interest in politics, noting her independent personality, leadership tendency and multilingual education.

Political leader Milton Olivo praised Santo Domingo Este mayor Dio Astacio for establishing a modern municipal model, citing a RD$300 million participatory budget for 2026 that will fund 96 community projects and urging stronger municipal resources and autonomy across the country.
