Luisito Pie denounces racist attacks, affirms Dominican identity

Dominican taekwondo Olympian Luisito Pie, bronze‑medalist at the 2016 Rio Games, broke his silence after receiving racist attacks on social media about his Haitian ancestry. In an Instagram post he declared, “I am Dominican and nothing will change that,” adding that he is proud of his Haitian roots and that a Dominican’s identity is defined by love for the country, not skin colour or surnames.

Pie also praised the support of Dominican fans, reiterated his backing of the country’s migration laws while rejecting any use of those laws to justify racism, and recalled his sporting achievements – a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games, medals at the Pan American Taekwondo Championships in 2014 and 2018, and his brother Bernardo Pie’s gold at the Central American Games in Santo Domingo.
