Dominican overseas deputies face scrutiny over legislative inaction

Dominican overseas deputies are facing scrutiny over their failure to deliver significant legislation for citizens living abroad. Although the right for Dominicans residing outside the country to elect representatives was established in the Constitution between 2004 and 2011, and elections began in 2012, critics argue that the legislative impact has been minimal.

The seven current deputies, all members of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), represent three constituencies: North America (including the US and Canada), Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite 14 years of representation in the Dominican National Congress, these officials have reportedly failed to pass meaningful updates regarding retirement laws, vehicle importation, or healthcare for the diaspora. Instead, their legislative activity has been characterized as primarily ceremonial, such as issuing certificates, rather than fulfilling campaign promises to defend the interests of compatriots living abroad.
