Dominican police officer detained after fatal shooting of Darlin Mercado in Herrera
Nineteen‑year‑old Darlin Enmanuel Mercado Reyes was killed by a shot from police officer cabo José Francisco Moreta Heredia during a police operation in the La Cañada de Guajimía sector of Herrera, Santo Domingo Oeste. A video of the incident circulated on social media, showing the officer draw his weapon and fire at the youth.
The National Police suspended the officer and handed him over to the Ministry of Public Prosecutors, which opened a homicide investigation and announced it will request preventive detention for the suspect. President Luis Abinader called the officer an “animal” and demanded an exemplary sentence, while Prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso said the case will be prosecuted as voluntary homicide.
Family members, community groups, the opposition party Fuerza del Pueblo and human‑rights organisations have staged protests and called for transparent, independent investigations. The case has revived public debate over the ongoing police reform programme in the Dominican Republic, with officials emphasizing zero tolerance for unlawful use of force and promising stricter oversight.
