Dominican President Luis Abinader urged to block gambling expansion bill

The Red de Ciudadanos Contra la Corrupción, represented by spokesperson Enmanuel Pimentel Reyes, formally asked President Luis Abinader to intervene and stop a draft law that would amend Law 140‑02. The proposal would expand horse‑racing agencies, permit slot‑machine gambling in those venues and eliminate the rule requiring a minimum 500‑metre distance from schools, hospitals and other public places.

The group warned that the change could create up to 35,000 new betting points nationwide, exposing children, low‑income families and other vulnerable groups to gambling addiction. It said it would file a constitutional challenge if the executive does not veto the bill.
