According to the ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026’ report published by United Nations agencies, hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean has declined for the fifth consecutive year.

The report indicates that hunger in the region decreased by 4.8% of the population over the last five years, leaving more than 30 million people still facing food insecurity. This improvement follows the economic recovery and the implementation of social programs after the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Dominican Republic has become the latest country in Latin America to achieve ‘zero hunger’, a statistical threshold defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as having less than 2.5% of the population suffering from chronic undernourishment.

With this achievement, six countries in the region have reached this milestone. The list of countries that have achieved zero hunger includes Brazil (2012), Costa Rica (2013), Uruguay (2015), Chile (2021), Guyana (2021), and most recently, the Dominican Republic (2026).
